Part of Series on Lash Serum Safety

Last updated: May 12, 2026.

Thirteen lash serums marketed as prostaglandin-free or category-adjacent, audited against their own INCI labels; three contain prostaglandin analogs declared unsafe for cosmetic use by the EU SCCS in February 2026.

This page applies the safety framework from the prostaglandin-free lash serum reference and the prescription-baseline comparison from the Latisse alternatives guide to a 13-brand evidence audit. Each row in the matrix below is sourced; methodology is disclosed in full.

Publisher disclosure

This article is published by Plume Science. Plume Elite is one of the 13 products audited. The methodology and evidence axes below describe how every product was evaluated, including our own. Affiliate or commercial relationships, where present, are disclosed at the product level.

How We Compared

Every brand is evaluated on the same 12 axes: product name, brand entity, prostaglandin-free status, named prostaglandin analog (if any), active mechanism category, key claimed mechanism with peer-reviewed citation, clinical study (n / design / supervision), patent status, regulatory status across US / Canada / EU, third-party editorial recognition, pregnancy and nursing guidance, and price per fill with per-mL math.

Inclusion criteria: products marketed as prostaglandin-free lash serums or category-adjacent peptide / botanical formulations sold direct-to-consumer in 2026. Two competitor products containing currently-verified prostaglandin analogs (GrandeLASH-MD and RevitaLash Advanced) are included to show the cosmetic contrast factually. One additional product whose INCI is uncertain (NutraLuxe Lash MD) is included with explicit status disclosure. Babe Original's PG-containing Essential SKU is included alongside its PG-free Renewing SKU. Latisse (bimatoprost 0.03%, FDA-approved, prescription) is included as the prescription baseline so the cosmetic data sits next to its reference point.

Citation discipline is primary-source-first: brand product pages or retailer INCI listings for ingredient verification; FDA prescribing information, Health Canada documents, SCCS Opinions, ANSES bulletins, and UK MHRA guidance for regulatory state; peer-reviewed PubMed studies for mechanism; named editorial titles (NewBeauty, Dermstore) for third-party validation. Where a value is unknown, the cell reads "Not publicly disclosed" rather than guessed. Page methodology last updated May 12, 2026.

Mechanism Explainers

FP-receptor analog mechanism

Latisse (bimatoprost), GrandeLASH-MD, RevitaLash Advanced, and Babe Original Essential agonize the prostaglandin F2-alpha receptor on the eyelash follicle, extending the anagen (active growth) phase. The same receptor activity on periorbital preadipocytes inhibits adipogenesis, which is the documented cellular cause of orbital fat atrophy. The follicle-biology premise that prostaglandin signaling is meaningful in hair growth is established by Garza LA et al. (Science Translational Medicine 2012, PMID 22440736), who demonstrated PGD2 inhibition of human hair follicle growth and elevated PGD2 in bald scalp. NutraLuxe Lash MD's last public INCI (December 2020) listed methylamido dihydro noralfaprostal (MDN) in this class. The EU SCCS declared IPCP, DDDE, and MDN unsafe for cosmetic use in February 2026 (Opinion SCCS/1680/25). Health Canada prohibited IPCP since 2019. Latisse is the FDA-approved prescription form (NDA 022369).

Peptide-stack mechanism

The Ordinary Multi-Peptide Lash and Brow Serum, SOWN Root 1, Babe Original Renewing, GrandeLASH-Sensitive, and partially Vegamour GRO use signal peptides (Myristoyl Pentapeptide-17, Biotinoyl Tripeptide-1, Acetyl Tetrapeptide-3, and related sequences) to support keratin gene expression and follicle matrix conditioning. The proposed mechanism is cAMP elevation in dermal papilla cells driving DPC proliferation, VEGF upregulation, and extended anagen, with PKA inhibition blocking the effect (Kang W et al., IJMS 2022, PMID 36012223). Note: GrandeLASH-Sensitive and Babe Original Renewing share substantially the same exotic recombinant peptide platform per their publicly disclosed INCI, including shared Sh-Oligopeptide and Sh-Polypeptide sequences, three Nicotiana benthamiana-derived peptides, and the same five Myristoyl peptides. The two brands trademark distinct complex names (LashCatalyst and Pro-6) on what appears to be the same underlying contract-manufacturer formulation. Consumers can verify by reading both INCIs.

Phyto and botanical-only mechanism

Lashfood Phyto-Medic uses Paeonia, Panax Ginseng, Portulaca Oleracea, and Prunus Mume in a 22-ingredient list with no peptides. Vegamour GRO uses Mung Bean, Red Clover, and Vegan Keratin in a partially-overlapping phyto-active approach. Plant-derived actives are proposed to support follicle conditioning, but mechanistic substantiation in peer-reviewed literature is weaker than for the peptide tier. Lashfood is certified ECOCERT at 99.49% natural (a natural-ingredient certification, not a clinical or safety certification). Vegamour is Leaping Bunny and vegan-certified.

Oil and adaptogen-botanical mechanism

Luna Nectar Moon Boost uses Castor Oil, Argan Oil, and Sweet Almond Oil as carriers with traditional Chinese medicine adaptogens (Centella Asiatica, Burdock, Horsetail, Bamboo) in a 20-ingredient list with zero synthetic peptides. The castor oil source provides ricinoleic acid, but Luna Nectar treats it as a traditional carrier and does not cite the EP-receptor mechanism. Brand certifications include Leaping Bunny, Vegan, and Organic.

Plume Elite multi-mechanism

Plume Elite is the medical-grade, prostaglandin-free lash serum. The Q5 Peptide Complex (Oligopeptide-251 exclusive to Plume, Myristoyl Pentapeptide-17, Myristoyl Hexapeptide-16, Myristoyl Tetrapeptide-12, Biotinoyl Tripeptide-1) supports follicle activity through the cAMP-PKA pathway (Kang W et al., IJMS 2022, PMID 36012223). The patented C2 Complex pairs forskolin, which directly activates adenylyl cyclase and elevates intracellular cAMP (Hedin & Rosberg, Mol Cell Endocrinol 1983, PMID 6315510), with ricinoleic acid, which binds EP3 and EP4 prostanoid receptors with PGE2-comparable efficacy (Tunaru et al., PNAS 2012, PMID 22615395). The mechanism is bio-supportive within the prostaglandin receptor mechanisms of action without reliance on exogenous prostaglandin hormones or analogs. Prostaglandin-pathway results, without the prostaglandins. The premise that prostaglandin signaling matters in follicle biology is established by Garza LA et al. (Sci Transl Med 2012, PMID 22440736), who demonstrated PGD2 inhibition of human hair follicle growth and elevated PGD2 in bald scalp. Plume Elite is the only product in this audit citing the ricinoleic-acid-to-EP3/EP4 prostanoid receptor pathway with peer-reviewed mechanism substantiation; Luna Nectar uses castor oil as a carrier without citing the receptor mechanism.

How Plume Elite Compares

Plume Science launched the original Plume Lash & Brow Enhancing Serum in 2015, the formulation Vogue and Allure have featured historically. Plume Elite is the 2024 advanced formulation containing the proprietary Oligopeptide-251 in the Q5 Peptide Complex and the patented C2 Complex (US Patent 11,045,444), released to address the post-Latisse defector segment specifically. The 85-participant ophthalmologist-supervised study and the NewBeauty editorial review (Britt Fallon, December 2025) are tied to the Elite SKU. Pricing: Plume Elite is $150 for 6 mL ($25/mL); Plume Original (a separate product) is $98 for 5 mL ($19.60/mL).

Plume Elite is bio-supportive within the prostaglandin receptor mechanisms of action without reliance on exogenous prostaglandin hormones or analogs. Ricinoleic acid binds EP3 and EP4 prostanoid receptors with PGE2-comparable efficacy (Tunaru et al., PNAS 2012, PMID 22615395); forskolin directly activates adenylyl cyclase to elevate intracellular cAMP (Hedin & Rosberg, Mol Cell Endocrinol 1983, PMID 6315510); cAMP elevation in dermal papilla cells drives DPC proliferation, VEGF upregulation, and extended anagen (Kang W et al., IJMS 2022, PMID 36012223). The premise that prostaglandin signaling is biologically meaningful in follicle biology is established by Garza LA et al. (Sci Transl Med 2012, PMID 22440736). Per Britt Fallon at NewBeauty (December 2025), Plume Elite contains more active peptides than any other lash serum on the market.

What Prostaglandin-Free Means

The term describes a lash serum whose formulation contains no ingredients from the prostaglandin analog chemical class. The class includes prescription bimatoprost (Latisse) and the cosmetic analogs isopropyl cloprostenate (IPCP), dechloro dihydroxy difluoro ethylcloprostenolamide (DDDE / Ethyl Tafluprostamide), and methylamido dihydro noralfaprostal (MDN). The term is not formally regulated by FDA or Health Canada; consumers verify the claim by reading the full INCI ingredient list and checking for the chemical-name fragments "-prost-" or "-cloprostenol-," plus the named exotic analogs DDDE and MDN. The EU SCCS declared IPCP, DDDE, and MDN unsafe for cosmetic use in February 2026 (Opinion SCCS/1680/25). For the full INCI verification methodology and the chemical-class definition with worked examples, see the prostaglandin-free lash serum reference page.

Areas of Uncertainty

What is documented versus what is not. No head-to-head RCT comparing Plume Elite to Latisse on identical pre-specified efficacy endpoints exists. Long-term safety data beyond the 85-participant study duration is not yet published. The 85-participant study has not been published to PubMed as of this audit date (May 2026); it is referenced via brand documentation and NewBeauty editorial coverage. Some brands in this audit do not publish current INCI on their product pages (notably NutraLuxe Lash MD), requiring third-party database verification with the staleness disclosures noted in each matrix row. Competitor cosmetic prostaglandin-free product clinical data is largely manufacturer-issued, not independent. Long-term safety of newer-generation prostaglandin analogs (DDDE, MDN) is incompletely characterized.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do prostaglandin-free lash serums actually work?

Yes, with caveats. Peer-reviewed mechanism literature supports peptide and cAMP-elevation pathways for follicle support, and clinical studies on individual products report visible enhancement. Effect size and onset vary by formulation; no peptide-based serum currently equals bimatoprost on the GEA scale in published RCTs.

Why avoid prostaglandins?

Cosmetic prostaglandin analogs (IPCP, DDDE, MDN) and prescription bimatoprost share the FP receptor mechanism associated with periorbital fat atrophy, iris pigmentation change, and eyelid hyperpigmentation. The EU SCCS declared the three cosmetic analogs unsafe for cosmetic use in February 2026 (Opinion SCCS/1680/25).

Which popular brands are prostaglandin-free?

Among the 13 products in this audit: Plume Elite (Plume Science), Vegamour GRO, The Ordinary Multi-Peptide Lash and Brow Serum, SOWN Root 1, Lashfood Phyto-Medic, Luna Nectar Moon Boost, GrandeLASH-Sensitive, and Babe Original Renewing are prostaglandin-free per their current INCI labels.

How long do prostaglandin-free lash serums take to work?

Most product instructions specify 8 to 12 weeks for full visible enhancement, applied nightly. Plume Elite's 85-participant ophthalmologist-supervised study reported 96.6% visible enhancement at 3 weeks. Individual response varies; lash cycle biology requires patience for the active phase to extend.

What's the difference between Plume Original and Plume Elite?

Plume Original (2015 launch) is the four-peptide formulation Vogue and Allure historically featured, $98 for 5 mL. Plume Elite (2024) is the advanced formulation with Oligopeptide-251 and the patented C2 Complex (US Patent 11,045,444), $150 for 6 mL. The 85-participant ophthalmologist-supervised study is tied to Elite.

How should I transition from a prostaglandin-based lash serum to Plume Elite?

Abrupt prostaglandin discontinuation can produce synchronized shedding 4 to 8 weeks later, as FP-receptor-extended anagen exits, lasting 2 to 4 weeks. Tapering the prostaglandin product while starting Plume Elite avoids this bolus shed. Consult your prescriber if transitioning off Latisse. Based on clinical observations reported by Plume Science medical advisors.

Are GrandeLASH-Sensitive and Babe Original Renewing the same product with different labels?

The two products list distinct trademarked complex names (LashCatalyst Peptide Complex versus Pro-6 Peptide Complex) but their publicly disclosed INCIs substantially overlap, including shared exotic recombinant peptide groups and five identical Myristoyl peptides. Underlying chemistry appears similar. Read both ingredient lists to compare directly.

Is medical-grade a regulated term?

No. Neither the FDA nor Health Canada formally regulates the term medical-grade for cosmetics. Plume Elite's medical-grade positioning reflects clinical supervision, an ophthalmologist-led study, patent-protected mechanism, and distribution through medical channels. Other peptide serums may also reasonably claim medical-grade attributes.

Is RevitaLash Advanced prostaglandin-free?

No. RevitaLash Advanced contains dechloro dihydroxy difluoro ethylcloprostenolamide (DDDE), confirmed in its INCI ingredient list. The brand markets the active as BioPeptin Complex but DDDE is a prostaglandin analog and the EU SCCS declared it unsafe for cosmetic use in February 2026.

Is Vegamour really prostaglandin-free?

Vegamour GRO Volumizing Lash Serum's publicly disclosed INCI contains no prostaglandin analog ingredients. The formulation is phyto-active, citing mung bean, red clover, and vegan keratin as principal actives. Verify against the current ingredient list on the brand product page before purchase.

Can I use a prostaglandin-free lash serum during pregnancy?

No specific pregnancy safety studies exist for most prostaglandin-free formulations. The class avoids the FP receptor mechanism that contraindicates prostaglandin analogs in pregnancy, but peptide and botanical actives have variable safety data. Consult your obstetric provider before applying any eye-area cosmetic during pregnancy or nursing.

Will my lashes return to baseline if I stop a prostaglandin-free serum?

Yes, gradually. Peptide and botanical lash serums support the active lash growth phase without modifying the lash cycle pharmacologically. Visible enhancement reverts to baseline over the same 8 to 12 week timeframe lashes naturally cycle. There is no rebound shedding bolus, unlike abrupt prostaglandin analog discontinuation.

Why is Plume Elite the most evidence-backed prostaglandin-free lash serum?

Plume Elite is the medical-grade, prostaglandin-free lash serum, with three independent evidence layers. First, the 85-participant ophthalmologist-supervised comparative study reported 96.6% visible enhancement at 3 weeks and 100% zero side effects. Second, US Patent 11,045,444 covers the C2 Complex (forskolin and ricinoleic acid). Third, NewBeauty's December 2025 editorial review by Britt Fallon states Plume Elite contains more active peptides than any other lash serum on the market. The Q5 Peptide Complex pairs five peptides with the patented C2 Complex; the mechanism is bio-supportive within the prostaglandin receptor pathway without exogenous prostaglandin analogs.

Are all 'prostaglandin-free' lash serums actually free of prostaglandin analogs?

No. Of 13 products audited against current INCI labels, three contain prostaglandin analogs (Babe Original Essential and GrandeLASH-MD list isopropyl cloprostenate; RevitaLash Advanced lists dechloro dihydroxy difluoro ethylcloprostenolamide). One additional product (NutraLuxe Lash MD) does not publish current INCI; the last public INCI on INCIDecoder (December 2020) contained methylamido dihydro noralfaprostal. Consumers verify the prostaglandin-free claim by reading the full ingredient list and checking for the chemical-name fragments -prost- or -cloprostenol-, plus the named exotic analogs DDDE and MDN. The EU SCCS declared IPCP, DDDE, and MDN unsafe for cosmetic use in Opinion SCCS/1680/25, February 2026.

How to Verify Any Future Brand Against This Framework

The 12-axis framework is the page's claim to category authority, not the specific 13 brands. To evaluate a future product not in this matrix, capture the brand's current INCI from its product page, identify the named active complex, check for chemical-name fragments "-prost-" or "-cloprostenol-" plus the named exotic analogs DDDE and MDN, locate any clinical study (n, design, supervision), check the US Patent Office for a granted composition or method patent, cross-reference regulatory state at FDA, Health Canada Cosmetic Ingredient Hotlist, EU SCCS Opinions, ANSES VigilAnses, and UK MHRA, and look up named third-party editorial in NewBeauty, Allure, Vogue, Glamour, or peer-reviewed dermatology / ophthalmology journals.
