Evidence-led guide · Updated August 8, 2026

Longer-looking lashes start with realistic expectations: eyelashes grow in cycles, damage takes time to replace, and conditioning an existing lash is not the same as changing follicle growth. This guide separates what is known, what may help, and what is mostly marketing.

How can you grow eyelashes?

Protect the lashes you have, remove eye makeup gently, avoid repeated traction from extensions or curlers, and allow at least one complete lash cycle to judge regrowth. Prescription bimatoprost can increase lash growth but has drug-specific risks. Cosmetic peptide serums and conditioners may support fuller-looking lashes or reduce breakage, but their evidence and effects vary by formula.

How long does it take eyelashes to grow?

Eyelash follicles move through growth, transition, resting, and shedding phases. In a small human characterization study, the calculated active-growth phase averaged 34 ± 9 days and the complete cycle averaged 90 ± 5 days. Individual timing varies, so a damaged lash line will not look restored overnight even when the follicles remain healthy.

What a realistic lash-regrowth timeline can look like
Time What may be happening What to do
Weeks 0–2 Recently damaged or shed lashes may leave visible gaps. Existing lashes can look better conditioned, but new growth may not yet be obvious. Stop the source of traction or irritation and use gentle removal habits.
Weeks 3–6 Some follicles may enter or continue active growth. Changes are usually subtle and uneven because follicles are not synchronized. Stay consistent; compare photographs taken in the same lighting instead of checking daily.
Weeks 7–12 More of the lash line has had time to move through the cycle. This is a more useful window for assessing a cosmetic routine. Evaluate density, breakage, irritation, and tolerability—not just the longest lash.
After 12 weeks Persistent gaps, progressive thinning, redness, scale, or loss of brows and scalp hair may signal something beyond cosmetic damage. Ask a qualified healthcare professional for an assessment.

A practical 12-week lash-growth routine

  1. Remove makeup without pulling. Soften mascara and liner before wiping. Press gently and wipe in the direction of the lash instead of rubbing side to side.
  2. Pause repeated traction. If extensions, adhesive removal, lash lifts, or aggressive curling are causing breakage, give the lash line time without the stressor.
  3. Keep the eyelid margin clean. Follow your eye-care professional's advice if you have blepharitis, persistent flaking, redness, or recurrent irritation. Do not apply cosmetic serum to inflamed or broken skin.
  4. Choose one consistent cosmetic routine. Switching formulas every few days makes tolerability and progress difficult to judge. Follow the product directions and stop if irritation occurs.
  5. Photograph at baseline, week 6, and week 12. Use the same lighting, angle, mascara status, and camera distance. Cosmetic change is easier to assess in controlled comparisons.
  6. Review the result honestly. Look for reduced breakage and a fuller-looking lash line. If loss continues or is patchy, seek medical advice rather than adding more products.

What actually helps eyelashes look longer or fuller?

Option What it can reasonably do Important limitation
Reduce breakage and traction Preserves more of the existing lash shaft and prevents avoidable loss. Cannot reverse scarring or treat an underlying medical cause.
Conditioners and humectants Improve flexibility and reduce brittleness, helping existing lashes look healthier. Conditioning is not proof of altered follicle growth.
Peptide-based cosmetic serums May support the appearance of fuller-looking lashes through conditioning and formula-specific cosmetic mechanisms. Evidence varies. Ingredient-level research does not automatically prove the finished product's effect.
Prostaglandin-analog products Can prolong the active growth phase. LATISSE (bimatoprost) is the FDA-approved prescription example. Drug and analogue use involves distinct risks and professional guidance. Review the current label and full ingredient list.
Castor oil Can coat and condition the lash shaft. There is no strong human evidence that castor oil alone makes healthy eyelash follicles grow faster.
Nutrition Correcting a diagnosed deficiency can help when that deficiency contributes to hair loss. Extra supplements do not reliably accelerate lash growth in a person without a deficiency and may have risks.

Growing lashes without prostaglandins

A prostaglandin-free routine focuses on protecting the lash shaft and using cosmetic ingredients that do not belong to the prostaglandin or prostamide analogue class. That distinction matters, but it does not make every non-prostaglandin formula equally effective or appropriate for every person. Use Plume's guide to growing lashes without prostaglandins to review ingredients, evidence, trade-offs, and the 12-week routine.

How to regrow lashes after extensions or breakage

If the lash shaft broke or was pulled while the follicle remained intact, regrowth may become visible as the follicle cycles. Repeated traction can keep removing new lashes before they mature. Stop or reduce the triggering service, avoid picking adhesive, and allow a full cycle before drawing conclusions.

Burning, swelling, discharge, persistent redness, or sudden gaps deserve professional attention. Read the dedicated lash recovery after extensions guide for a gentler reset routine.

What does not reliably make lashes grow faster?

  • Trimming lashes: cutting a hair shaft does not change the follicle's growth rate.
  • Applying more product: extra applications do not necessarily improve results and can increase irritation.
  • Using several serums together: this makes reactions harder to trace and does not establish additive benefit.
  • Assuming “natural” means risk-free: botanicals and essential oils can irritate the eye area.
  • Relying on biotin without a diagnosed deficiency: supplementation is not a universal shortcut and high-dose biotin can interfere with some laboratory tests.

What if you are pregnant or breastfeeding?

Do not treat “prostaglandin-free” as a pregnancy-safety certification. Product-specific pregnancy data are limited for most cosmetic lash formulas, including peptide and botanical products. Review the complete ingredient list with your OB, midwife, pharmacist, or other qualified healthcare professional. Plume's lash-serum pregnancy evidence guide explains the current LATISSE label, ingredient classes, and questions to ask.

When should eyelash loss be medically evaluated?

Acquired eyebrow and eyelash loss can have local or systemic causes. Seek qualified medical advice when loss is sudden, patchy, painful, scar-like, accompanied by eyelid inflammation, or occurs with eyebrow or scalp-hair loss. A cosmetic serum cannot diagnose or treat thyroid disease, autoimmune alopecia, infection, dermatitis, nutritional deficiency, medication effects, or another underlying condition.

Important: This page is consumer education, not medical advice. Do not put a cosmetic product into the eye or apply it to inflamed skin. Stop use and obtain advice if a product causes persistent redness, pain, swelling, or vision changes.

Frequently asked questions

How can I grow my lashes naturally?

The most useful “natural” approach is preventing avoidable breakage: remove makeup gently, avoid repeated traction, do not pick at adhesives, and allow the follicle cycle time to replace shed lashes. Oils may condition the shaft, but they have not been shown to make healthy follicles grow dramatically faster.

How long does it take eyelashes to grow back?

Timing varies by follicle and type of damage. A human characterization study estimated an average complete eyelash cycle of about 90 days. Visible recovery can therefore take several weeks to a few months when the follicle is intact.

Can eyelashes grow back after extensions?

Often, yes, when loss resulted from temporary traction or breakage and the follicle was not scarred. Continued pulling, inflammation, or scarring can delay or prevent recovery, so persistent gaps should be evaluated.

Do prostaglandin-free lash serums work?

Some cosmetic formulas may improve the appearance of lash length, density, or condition, but results and evidence vary by finished product. “Prostaglandin-free” tells you which ingredient class is absent; it does not by itself prove efficacy.

Does castor oil grow eyelashes?

Castor oil can coat and condition lashes, which may reduce a dry or brittle appearance. Strong human evidence that castor oil alone accelerates eyelash-follicle growth is lacking.
