The Eyelash Growth Cycle: How Long Lashes Take to Grow Back

Eyelashes grow asynchronously through active growth, transition, rest, and shedding. Because each follicle is on its own schedule, a lash line can change unevenly and a fair regrowth assessment usually takes weeks rather than days.

Lash biology 101
Most of us have 90 – 160 lashes on the upper lash line, distributed among five to six rows. The lower lash line can have up to 80 eyelashes.
Each eyelash is made up of a hair shaft (the lash you see), a root beneath the skin, and a bulb where the new hair begins growing. The bulb is connected to the dermal papilla (blood supply) which nourishes the lashes so they can grow.
Although we love lashes for their eye-framing drama, they also have a purely functional purpose. Eyelashes are extra sensitive to touch, and when an object or particle touches them, they send automatic signals to the brain to close the eye. Lashes also help filter sunlight and shield the eyes from any unwanted debris or sweat.
The Eyelash Growth Cycle Explained
Eyelashes pass through anagen (active growth), catagen (transition), and telogen (rest and shedding). Estimates vary by study, population, and phase definition. A small human characterization study calculated an average active-growth phase of 34 ± 9 days and an average complete cycle of 90 ± 5 days. Broader reviews report wider phase ranges; figures drawn from different sources should not be added together as though they describe one measured cycle.
Where a follicle is in that cycle affects when a new lash becomes visible. That timing is one reason cosmetic changes can appear uneven and why daily inspection is less useful than consistent photographs taken several weeks apart.

Anagen (Active Growth) Phase
In this phase, the hair is attached to the dermal papilla (blood supply) which ‘feeds’ the lash and helps it grow. About 35-40% of the upper lashes (and 15% of lower lashes) will be in the growth phase at one time – this ensures you don’t lose all your lashes at once when the falling-out phase starts.
Published estimates place the active-growth phase on the order of several weeks. In the small human characterization study cited below, the calculated average was 34 ± 9 days and the measured growth rate was approximately 0.12 to 0.14 mm per day. Individual follicles vary.
A finished cosmetic formula may condition existing lashes and support a fuller-looking lash line, but ingredient-level mechanisms do not by themselves prove that a serum changes the duration of anagen. Evaluate product-specific evidence and its limitations.
Because only a portion of lashes are actively growing at any one time, visible changes can appear first in part of the lash line while other follicles continue through transition or rest.

Catagen (Transition) Phase
In this phase, the hair follicle regresses and the eyelash stops lengthening. Reviews commonly describe catagen as lasting roughly a few weeks, but exact boundaries vary with the method used to define each phase.
If an eyelash unnaturally falls out (or is pulled out) during this phase, that follicle stays empty while it completes this phase and moves on to Telogen. That means you’ll have an empty spot until that follicle reaches the Anagen phase again.
During this phase, gentle makeup removal and reduced traction can help prevent avoidable shaft breakage or premature pulling. Conditioning can improve flexibility, but it cannot restart a follicle or treat an underlying cause of lash loss.

Telogen (Resting & Shedding) Phase
In this phase, a retained lash rests before shedding as the follicle progresses toward a new cycle. Reviews describe the resting and shedding interval as ranging from several weeks to a few months, depending on definitions and observation methods. That broader range is not directly additive to the 90 ± 5-day complete-cycle estimate from the small characterization study because the sources use different methods and phase boundaries.
No cosmetic can force every resting follicle to re-enter growth on the same schedule. Protect the lash line, follow one routine consistently, and allow enough time for asynchronous follicles to cycle.

Why do results appear faster for some people?
Starting cycle stage, baseline density, recent breakage or traction, application consistency, formula tolerability, and the cause of thinning can all affect what a person sees. The cycle is only one factor, and separate brand claims cannot be compared as though they came from one head-to-head trial.
Early changes may be uneven because some follicles are active while others are transitioning or resting. Photograph the full lash line at baseline and at consistent intervals instead of judging a few individual lashes.

Lash Growth as You Age
As we age, the lash cycle slows and regeneration takes longer. Lashes may also become drier and more fragile. Consistent conditioning and support can help maintain the appearance of fuller, healthier lashes over time.
